Some Australians can access part of their superannuation early to pay for medically necessary dental treatment. This is a general information guide only — it is not financial or medical advice, and eligibility is determined entirely by the ATO.
The Australian Taxation Office allows eligible individuals to apply for early release of part of their superannuation on compassionate grounds. Dental treatment is one of several categories that may qualify — but only where the treatment is required to treat a life-threatening condition, or to relieve acute or chronic pain, or acute or chronic mental illness.
This is not an automatic entitlement. Every application is individually assessed by the ATO, and approval depends on documented medical necessity — not on personal preference or cosmetic goals.
The ATO generally considers applications for treatment that addresses a genuine medical need, such as:
Cosmetic treatments — including veneers, teeth whitening and Invisalign — do not meet the ATO’s compassionate grounds criteria and are not eligible for early release under this scheme.
Applying for compassionate release of super is a formal process managed directly through the ATO, not through a dental practice. In general terms, it involves:
Village Dental Care can provide a treatment quote and supporting documentation if you are considering this pathway for a medically necessary procedure such as dental infection, pain and dental implants,. We do not process applications, determine eligibility, or guarantee approval — that decision sits entirely with the ATO.
The ATO and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency have both issued public warnings about businesses and practitioners encouraging patients to access superannuation for treatment that is not genuinely necessary. Using super for an ineligible purpose can result in the amount being taxed as income and may trigger ATO review.
If you are considering this option, the most important first step is an honest conversation with a licensed financial adviser about whether accessing your super is the right decision for your circumstances — separate from any conversation about treatment itself. You will mot probably also have to pay tax on the amount withdrawn.
For patients who are not eligible for compassionate release, or who prefer not to access their super, Village Dental Care offers other payment options, including Afterpay for eligible treatments and health fund claiming at the time of your appointment.
No. The ATO only approves compassionate release for treatment required to address a life-threatening condition, or to relieve acute or chronic pain or mental illness. Cosmetic treatment does not qualify.
The ATO makes the final determination, based on documentation from your treating dentist and, in most cases, an independent medical or dental report. Village Dental Care cannot approve or guarantee eligibility.
Implants may be considered where they are required to restore function after tooth loss from disease, trauma or decay — not where they are chosen for cosmetic reasons. Each case is assessed individually by the ATO.
Timeframes vary and are set by the ATO, not by dental practices. Applications generally require supporting documentation and can take several weeks to be assessed.
Amounts released for an approved and legitimate purpose are generally not taxed as income, but rules can be complex and depend on individual circumstances. A licensed financial adviser or accountant can clarify how this applies to you.
We can provide a treatment quote and supporting clinical documentation if requested, but we do not process applications, determine eligibility, or work with any third-party super access facilitator.
Other payment options, including Afterpay and health fund claiming, are available. Visit our payment plans page for details.
The ATO’s website has the current eligibility criteria and application requirements for compassionate release of superannuation. A licensed financial adviser can help you assess whether this is the right option for your situation.
