Root Canal Treatment Bowral

Root canal treatment removes infected or damaged tissue from inside a tooth — relieving pain, clearing infection, and saving the tooth from extraction. Available at Village Dental Care in Bowral, using microscope-enhanced precision.

What Root Canal Treatment Actually Does

The name is more confronting than the procedure. Root canal treatment removes the infected or inflamed pulp from inside a tooth, thoroughly cleans and shapes the internal canals, and seals the tooth to prevent reinfection.

The result is a tooth that is no longer painful, no longer a source of spreading infection, and able to continue functioning in your mouth for many years. For most patients, the alternative is extraction, and replacing a missing tooth with an implant or bridge is more complex and expensive than treating it.

The discomfort patients associate with root canal treatment is the toothache that precedes it — not the procedure itself.

When Is Root Canal Treatment Needed?

The pulp inside a tooth can become infected or severely inflamed from:

  • Deep decay that has reached the pulp chamber
  • A crack or fracture that exposes the inner tooth
  • Repeated dental procedures on the same tooth over many years
  • Trauma — a knock or impact — even without a visible crack

Signs that a tooth may need root canal treatment include persistent or severe toothache, sensitivity to heat or cold that does not settle, darkening of the tooth, or swelling and tenderness in the gum near the affected area.

In some cases, a tooth that needs treatment causes no pain at all and is identified on routine X-rays. This is one of the strongest reasons to attend regular dental check-ups.

If you are in severe pain and cannot wait for a scheduled appointment, our emergency dentist in Bowral can assess and stabilise the tooth promptly.

The Root Canal Procedure: A Detailed Look

Microscope-Enhanced Root Canal Treatment

Dr Justin Tan is the only dentist in the Southern Highlands using a dental microscope for all clinical procedures — including root canal treatment. This is not a minor detail for endodontic work.

Root canals are narrow, curved, and often branch in ways that are impossible to detect without magnification. The microscope allows Dr Tan to locate and clean canal systems that standard magnification consistently misses — which directly affects how thoroughly the infection is cleared and how well the tooth holds up over time.

What the Procedure Involves

Root canal treatment at Village Dental Care is carried out under local anaesthesia. The sequence is:

  1. The tooth and surrounding tissue are numbed with a local anaesthetic
  2. Access is created through the top of the tooth to reach the pulp chamber
  3. The infected or inflamed pulp tissue is removed under microscope magnification
  4. The canals are cleaned, shaped and disinfected
  5. The canals are filled and sealed with a biocompatible material
  6. A temporary or permanent filling closes the access opening

Most root canal treatments are completed in one or two appointments of around 60–90 minutes each, depending on the severity of the infection and the number of canals in the tooth.

Sedation for Anxious Patients

Root canal treatment is one of the most anxiety-provoking dental procedures. At Village Dental Care, IV sedation through our sleep dentistry service is available for patients who prefer to be less aware of the procedure.

Dr Tan holds Dental Board certification for intravenous sedation administered on-site. You do not need to travel to a hospital or specialist clinic. The combination of sedation and microscope-enhanced treatment makes a significant difference to the experience of anxious patients.

Protecting the Tooth After Treatment

A root canal-treated tooth becomes more brittle over time because the living pulp has been removed. In most cases, placing a dental crown in Bowral over the treated tooth is recommended to protect it and restore full biting function.

Village Dental Care uses CEREC same-day crown technology. The crown is designed, milled and fitted in a single visit — no temporary crown, no lab wait, no second appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions

The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic and should not be painful. Most patients describe feeling pressure and movement but no pain. For anxious patients, IV sedation is available in-house at Village Dental Care.

Most cases are completed in one to two appointments of approximately 60–90 minutes each, depending on the number of canals and the extent of the infection.

Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until the final restoration is in place. Stick to soft foods and avoid very hot or very cold items for the first 24 hours. Normal eating resumes once the permanent crown or filling is placed.

Without treatment, the infection continues to spread — into surrounding bone, nearby teeth, and potentially the jaw. Extraction becomes inevitable, and replacing the missing tooth with an implant or bridge is considerably more expensive and complex than treating it.

With a crown placed over the tooth and consistent oral hygiene, a root canal-treated tooth can last as long as a natural tooth — often 15 to 20 years or more.

In most cases, yes. The tooth becomes more brittle after the pulp is removed and is at greater risk of fracture under biting pressure. A crown restores full strength and function.

In most situations, yes — if the tooth can be saved. Extraction removes the pain immediately but leaves a gap. Replacing it with an implant costs significantly more over the long term than root canal treatment plus a crown. Dr Tan will advise honestly on which option is appropriate for your specific tooth.

Contact us to arrange an assessment. Dr Tan will examine the tooth, take the necessary imaging, and give you a clear explanation of what treatment involves and what it will cost before anything is confirmed.
